Cultural project for the remodelling of the Milchbuck school library in Zurich
On a study trip to Tunisia in autumn 2023 with the CAS Arts and International Cooperation under the direction of Dagmar Reichertartasfoundation, we visited the cultural institution Art Rue. Building a classroom democratically, a project in which students are allowed to build their own creative micro-centre with the help of experts in a democratic process, aroused my enthusiasm. I adapted the project into Studio Demo.
Promoting democratic values is essential for young people in a young democracy like Tunisia, just as it is here in Switzerland. Young people are the democracy of tomorrow and it is now more important than ever to teach creativity, because it strengthens self-confidence and fulfils people.
In the Studio Demo project, we want to let pupils from Milchbuck School experience democratic values in a creative and exemplary way.
The aim is to redesign an important space in the school that is rarely used and is not popular with the pupils: As part of the gifted and talented programme, the upper school library at Milchbuck School is being rethought and redesigned in terms of content and space by 12 selected pupils. This is taking place in a democratic, participatory process.
The pupils involved will be involved in the entire process and will carry it out under the direction of Alain Scherer(designer), Chantal Wuhrmann (Milchbuck school, cultural officer) and Seline Fülscher (cultural mediator, initiator). The democratically selected design for the upper school library is being realised in collaboration with the City of Zurich's School Planning and Construction Department.
